DEPARTMENT ORDER # 6, 2022-2023

28th Encampment of the Department of Tennessee – Early Notice

Brothers,

We are beginning the planning of the 28th Encampment of the Department of Tennessee.  Department Encampments give us a chance to come together in Fraternity, do business, share and learn.  I have heard the comments and concerns that our Encampments have been poorly attended over the past several years, and that we have lost some of the comradery.  To address this, the following information and direction is issued.

  1. The 28th Department Encampment will be held at Shiloh National Battlefield on the 18th of March 2023.

As our business meeting rarely takes all day, the intent is to meet, have lunch, and then there are other events in the works.  We believe we will be spending time with the new Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War as they come into existence.  We are hoping some to take some time to honor the Boys in Blue who fought at Shiloh.  We are planning an informal dinner on Saturday night near the park.

  2. Pre-registration for the Encampment is beginning effective this order.

    1. A block of rooms has been made available at The Holiday Inn Express, 2106 US Hwy 72W, Corinth, MS 38835 [662.287.1407].  Twenty rooms have been allotted at a rate of $114 per night.  The rate may decrease with market rate over time, yet we are secure that it will not be above this if you get a reservation prior to 17 February 2023.  To take advantage of the rate, tell them you are with the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.  The discount code is “CIVILWAR”.  You must call the local number.

Free breakfast is included.  There is a mini-fridge, microwave, and Kuerig in every room.

    2. IF you know you are attending – please email me (deptcommander@suvcwdepttn.org) and the Department Secretary / Treasurer (deptsectreas@suvcwdepttn.org).

  3. Additional cost for the Encampment are being determined. Frankly, some of the costs will be determined by the number of Brothers who express intent to attend.  There are minimum quantities required if we pursue having a Department Medal.  And catered food costs for lunch will vary by number of Brothers attending.

  4. If there are agenda items from Brothers and the Camps, please begin forwarding them to the Department Secretary / Treasurer (deptsectreas@suvcwdepttn.org).

  5. Finally, I am appointing Br. David DuBrucq, PDC as head of a nominating committee for Department Officers for 2023-2024. The remainder of the committee shall be the Camp Commanders (including the future Capt. Asa N. “Black Hawk” Hays Camp #81).  The ask I have of the committee is that we find Department Officers that are dedicated to filling the office that they are elected to and as knowledgeable as possible about the workings of the Order.  There is no requirement in CC&R or our by-laws for Brothers to progress through the line, although there is some benefit to doing so.  Brothers who are interested in an elected or appointed Department role should contact Br. DuBrucq (sockettuem@att.net) to help the committee in their work.

Ordered this 5th day of September 2022.

In Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty,

George Andrew Huttick
Department Commander
Department of Tennessee
Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War
